Little did I know that an invitation to co-author a book about my life experiences along with 10 other successful black women, would set me on a path to fulfilling a once adamant goal as a young girl of becoming a teacher.
As I sat down and began writing my contribution to the book, I was thrusted into a realization about the lack of both the education and attention given to kids of my generation when it came to financial literacy teaching, at home and in schools. This missing piece of my education could have very well changed the financial trajectory of not only my life but the life of many others.
I was a young girl growing up in Oakland, CA, where the topic of money, having credit or saving was never discussed or taught in my home, let alone in our school’s curriculum. I can recall, that whenever anyone would ask me the question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”, I would always respond, “I want be a teacher”. I was steadfast in this longing for many years until one day I discovered, later in my teens that a teacher’s salary would likely not bring the wealth that I had dreamt of one day attaining. As I grew into young adulthood, I allowed my career path the freedom to take flight and carry me in directions unknown always with my entrepreneurial spirit intact. Fast forward to today, I have opened (and closed) many successful businesses from an attorney support service, an online women’s golf apparel store, credit repair consultancy and my current real estate brokerage, eAgent Pro Realty.
Today, as a Certified Financial Education Instructor (CFEI) and Founder of When I Grow Up CA Inc. I now arrive at my season to teach and make it my heart work to impact as many lives as I can by bringing a holistic approach to teaching and promoting financial education. We are rooted in the premise that learning should not only provide direct education on specific topics, but it must also prepare our students to meet real-life challenges that lie ahead of them.
When I Grow Up CA is dedicated to both my lost childhood, lost in that it lacked the most basic knowledge surrounding money matters and a skill set that perhaps would have allowed me to become financially sound so much earlier in my live. It is also dedicated to children growing up in those areas that suffer from clear and present disparities where the topic of financial literacy is taken for granted.
The positive impact and power of Financial Literacy is undeniable and the sooner this is brought to light, the better off we will all be because without it, decisions and the actions taken, or not taken lack a solid foundation for success.
